ARYSTAN — LIVE LOOPING, DJ &MULTI-INSTRUMENTAL PERFORMANCE
Arystan
Global grooves, ritual energy, real-time creation
Hi, I’m Arystan — live looper, DJ and multi-instrumentalist. I started with vinyl DJing and early beat productions in the late 1990s, later studied jazz trumpet, and have since lived and worked between East Germany, Spain and Italy. Fieldwork with Gnawa ritual music in Morocco — and ongoing research into the ritual space — sharpened my sense for how repetition, pulse and collective focus can turn a room into a living, collective pulse.
In today’s performance culture, flawless execution is often prioritized over responsiveness — leaving less and less space for the unexpected. I cultivate the opposite: a practice of real-time listening and response, where improvisation is one factor among others — groove, structure, timing, and the collective attention in the room.
Live Looping
At the heart of every performance is the human voice — extended through trumpet, ngoni, flutes, percussion and electronics, channelled through a loop machine into layered, breathing soundscapes. Each layer is recorded, transformed and released in real time. Nothing is pre-programmed; the music builds from silence to full arrangement on the spot.
The loop station becomes an instrument in itself — not just a tool for stacking sounds, but a compositional partner that shapes structure, tension and release. Loops decay, mutate, interrupt each other. The result is music that feels both composed and alive: repetitive enough to invite trance, unpredictable enough to stay present.
For listeners, this means witnessing a piece of music being born — from first breath to full groove to gradual dissolution. There’s a transparency to the process that invites attention, and a rawness that studio recordings rarely offer.

Experience
Clubs, basement parties, art openings, theatre premieres and festivals across Europe, West Africa and the Caribbean. I prefer intimate settings where the performer remains present and responsive — part of the room, not separate from it.
My ongoing practice-based research into ritual space and altered states of consciousness shapes how I think about music as a transformative practice — not in an esoteric sense, but functionally: rhythm, repetition and collective presence can shift something in a room.
